With major institutions like the Hudson River School creating masterpieces since the mid-19th Century, art has been in the life blood of the Catskills region for many years. Fast forward to present day -- the modern renaissance is now an unstoppable force backed by lots of local talent and passion. The Catskill Mountain Foundation has made it their mission to make the Catskills an Art Mecca. Visitors to the Catskills are surrounded by the arts, unique shopping and fantastic dining options all set in the rustic, majestic purple mountains. Whether you choose to delight in the outdoor Kaaterskill Falls or in the cultural institutions found throughout the towns of Hunter, Tannersville and Windham, your family will want to make this an annual retreat.

Looking for a family adventure? Head to Hunter’s Mountain for some zip-lining fun. Your family will love stepping off six ledges into the wild adrenaline abyss. Supported by Hemlocks and the crafty safety and pure comedy of tour guides, Chris and Dabo, you will glide through the air with ease, giddy and wanting more! There is also a tremendous Adventure Tower for your bravest adventurers!

If you are a winter bird, Hunter Mountain has you covered. Skiing and snowboarding are main staples of the local economy and the ski resort has recently refurbished the slope with new generators and state of the art snow blowers located strategically through the mountain. We visited on a balmy 65 degree day and saw the slopes up and ready to go with tons of snow babies out in full gear flying down the slopes.

Is 9 AM a bit early for whipped cream, chocolate and bananas? Not at the Catskill Mountain Store and the Chunky Monkey waffle is worth every calorie! Indulgences are found throughout the store; make sure you try the handmade fudge and pick up a gift for the little ones from their Toy Shop.

Lunch is best enjoyed at the local burger spot, Mama’s Boy Burgers. With a variety of burgers to choose from and an ice cream window to boot, 50’s nostalgia kicks right in. I happily stuffed my face with the Big Daddy and the crispy pickle chips! YUM!

Our favorite dinner spot was the gorgeous Arts and Crafts styled Deer Mountain Inn, complete with authentic William Morris textiles, that fills you with a quiet sense of rustic opulence. We loved the hearty braised rib and the pear sorbet. This place is great for a weekend getaway.

Make sure to check out the Orpheum in in Tannersville. We caught the Nutcracker and that show captured the audiences’ hearts with all the local children who performed alongside ballerinas trained by world renowned Valentina Kozlova, Victoria Rinaldi and choreographer Margo Sappington. These ladies give back to the community they call home and the ballerinas practice in New York City prior to the actual shows at the Orpheum. The outcome allows a community that might not otherwise be able to trek to NYC to delight in such a cultural icon. This community gives back to residencies for students to immerse in and learn about the Arts.

We also loved the Piano Museum that is a touch and play museum with pianos throughout the ages -- absolutely gorgeous hand-carved pianos that represent the history of the piano are on display. Check out the nearby Catskill Mountain Foundation’s Gallery which houses art in a variety of mediums. It's a great place to visit with your budding creators!

What an amazing weekend. We will return for more rugged sophistication to catch our breath from our busy lifestyle and relax in the majestic beauty of the Catskills.
