Bring the Grandparents Along on Your Family Vacation to Jamaica

By Anna Hall, Travel Writer and Macaroni Kid Publisher, Hickory, NC November 8, 2016
On a recent flight, I found myself seated behind a grandma in row 32 with her two young grandsons, ages four and six. Mom and Dad were somewhere in row 15 enjoying a break while Nana kept the kids entertained with the goody bags she put together for them specifically for this trip. I kept thinking: that is the way to travel. Afterall, bringing the grands along on vacation isn't just good for built-in babysitting services, it also offers other benefits like bonding, memory-making and the strengthening of relationships; an opportunity to try something new when following choices that may not be your own; and a chance to see things from different perspectives.

We were traveling to Jamaica, me a guest of the Jamaica Tourism Board and Melia Braco Village, a picturesque all-inclusive resort nestled on a secluded stretch of white sand beach and centrally located on Jamaica’s north coast between the two main tourist areas of Montego Bay and Ocho Rios. The entire trip I couldn't help but notice the many ways this island is perfect for multi-generational travel. Here is just a sample of a few attractions in Jamaica that will bring fun and enjoyment for every member of the family.

Chukka at Good Hope Estate
– This 2,000-acre recreational park blends nature, adventure, history, relaxation, culture and excitement provided by the Caribbean’s leading nature adventure excursion operator, Chukka Caribbean Adventure. There are so many activities to choose from here; everyone is sure to find something they will enjoy, be it riding a dune buggy or ATV, zipline canopy, a river experience with tubes or kayaks, gem mining, taking on a challenging course, exploring bird aviary, swimming in the pool, Appleton Rum tasting or visiting the historical highlight of the property, the 1700s Great House. Plan to spend the entire day here to experience as much as you can with the Ultimate Thrill Seekers Pass which also includes lunch and open bar.

Dunn’s River Falls and Park – Whether you bring the family to view the 600 feet of gently terraced falls from the deck area or to experience its crystal clear waters via a relaxing soak or an exciting climb, Dunn’s River Falls is a very popular destination for all visitors to the island. One of Jamaica’s national treasures, this area is a living and growing phenomenon and the only one of its kind in the Caribbean. The park property is decorated with lush tropical foliage and also features a beach, donkey rides, a craft market, a picnic area and a cafeteria.

Rainforest Adventures at Mystic Mountain
– Soar 700 feet above the rainforest on the Sky Explorer chair lift tour up to the top of Mystic Mountain, offering a 1000m gravity-driven bobsled ride, a canopy zipline tour, a 77m waterslide into an infinity edge pool with a breathtaking view of Ocho Rios Bay, butterfly & hummingbird gardens, a hiking trail, lookout tower and an on-site restaurant. With so many activities to choose from, every member of the family is sure to find something they’ll want to do while enjoying a picturesque change of scenery from the beach into the Jamaican rainforest.

Scotchies – For a taste of Jamaica, take the family to Scotchies, the most highly-regarded jerk pit, known worldwide for its authentic dishes. Jerk food is cooked in traditional style with traditional spices, on open air barbeques over pimento wood. The casual outdoor setting at this eatery, with its wooden tables, barrel stools and grass umbrellas, combined with the mouth-watering smells and delicious tastes, make this an authentic culinary experience the whole family will enjoy. Be sure to try the jerk fish!

Rose Hall Great House
– The greatest of Jamaican guest houses, Rose Hall has a haunting history. Built in the 1770s and now beautifully restored with 18th Century décor and antiques, this Georgian mansion is noted for the legend of its mistress, Annie Palmer, who is said to have possessed “black magic” powers that eventually led to its demise. Step back in time and take in the panoramic views from the hillside on which the impressive house sits. Tour the estate and hear the story of the White Witch of Rose Hall, a scarier version of which is offered during the candle-lit evening tour where the eerie tales come to life.

Sugar Mill Falls Water Park at Hilton Rose Hall Resort – The largest water park in Jamaica and second largest in the Caribbean, newly-renovated Sugar Mill Falls Water Park features a 280-foot water slide, cascading waterfalls and lagoons, a lazy river, three terraced pools, a jungle garden, three secluded spa tubs, daily family activities, a kid-friendly zone, two swim-up bars and more. Part of the beautiful Hilton Rose Hall Resort & Spa, park access is included for guests of the all-inclusive resort, with day passes available for purchase by visitors.

Glistening Waters Luminous Lagoon – Named one of the best experiences in Jamaica and known around the world as Jamaica’s only night-time attraction, a visit to Glistening Waters Luminous Lagoon is an absolute must. It is one of the most incredible sights and one of just a few spots in the world where phosphorescent water illuminates in a glowing shade of blue when disturbed. Guests on the boat tour have the option to swim in the shallow three- to eight-feet deep water, so do bring a swim suit for a truly magical and unique experience the family will cherish forever.

Ironically, on my flight back home, I was once again reunited with that same family from the flight to Jamaica 4 days prior. Everyone looked relaxed and happy as they told me about the wonderful vacation they had just enjoyed. Based on what I had just learned and experienced for myself, their positive feedback about the beauty of the island and the wealth of unique experiences available for the entire multi-generational family came as no surprise. They are planning a return trip and frankly, so am I. Mawmaw & Pawpaw, start packing!

I was a guest of the Jamaica Tourism Board for four nights during which accommodations, transportation, meals and activities were complimentary; no other compensation was received. All opinions expressed within this article are 100% my own.Save
