An Insider’s Guide: Portland, Maine

By Kayt DeMerchant, Publisher January 10, 2017
The small city of Portland, Maine, has topped many lists in recent years -- everything from greenest city, to top food city, to best city to raise a family -- or retire.

Best time of year to visit:
They call Maine "Vacationland" for a reason. Summer into early fall is the perfect time to visit this bustling seacoast city. Look at booking a trip in late June, late August or in October to avoid high traffic tourist seasons.

Where the locals will tell you to eat, play and rest:

Eat: Portland is chock full of delicious restaurants. Becky's Diner on Commercial Street is the place to go for breakfast. Check out the The Porthole Restaurant & Pub on Commercial Street for reasonably priced, delicious seafood -- all with a view of the harbor. Coffee lovers should make a stop at Coffee by Design (with multiple locations in the city). Can't live without dessert? Head to East End Cupcakes or Gelato Fiasco

Play: Daytime fun can be found just about anywhere in the city. Commercial Street is perfect for those looking to shop, eat or enjoy the ocean views. History buffs will enjoy Victoria Mansion or Wadsworth-Longfellow House. Art lovers should not miss the Portland Museum of Art. For nightlife, check out MJ's Wine Bar or Cellardoor at the Point. Looking for something less upscale? Go where the locals go -- J's Oyster. (But we warn you -- it's loud, smells like the sea and has just as salty of a crowd.)

Rest: After filling up on food and drink, rest your head at the Pomegranate Inn (best suited for adults traveling without children) or The Danforth (for those traveling with kids).

Where to Find your Family Fun:
Mackworth Island is located just outside of Portland (look for fairy houses hidden everywhere). While there check out Hadlock Field for a Sea Dogs Baseball Game, the International Cryptozoology Museum (for those kids that enjoy a little weird fun), Circus on The Point and Children's Museum & Theatre of Maine.

Portland's Best Kept Secret:
Peaks Island. Take a 20-minute ferry to Peaks Island, rent a golf cart or tandem bike and head off to explore. With several great restaurants, boutiques, an ice cream shoppe and the world's only Umbrella Cover Museum, there's plenty to do. Oh -- and the views from any point on the island are spectacular.
