Discovery Cove

By Joyce Shulman August 9, 2011

Discovery Cove in Orlando is the un-theme park.  Modeled after an all-inclusive resort experience, reservations are required and the number of visitors is strictly limited so that this sprawling tropical oasis never feels crowded.  There are no lines, no turnstiles and no crowds.  Instead, you’ll be greeted by name upon your arrival, led down a winding path to your locker and dressing room, given eco-friendly sunblock and a wetsuit before you are personally introduced to a dolphin.

As your day unwinds (and really, when else can you use the words “unwind” and “theme parks” in the same sentence), your options to explore continue.  Tucked away is the don’t miss Explorer's Aviary where an incredible array of birds await and just outside the aviary is a river that meanders through the resort.  New this year is the Grand Reef, a snorkeling adventure teaming with schools of beautiful fish and hundreds of rays.  Had enough?  Then it’s time for a delicious lunch.  Or grab a glass of wine and spread out on a sandy beach under an umbrella.  For 8 hours, you CAN pretend that you are on a tropical island … but one where there is so much for your kids to do that you will never hear those fateful words: "I’m bored."

All-inclusive means just that.  All attractions … including an up close and personal experience with a dolphin, the opportunity to feed the birds, snorkel with tropical fish and rays and dine and drink to your heart’s content  … are included.

The price?  At $199-$339 (depending on dates), a day at Discovery Cove does not come cheap.  But here’s how this incredible day helps to pay for itself: your admission to Discovery Cove also includes free admission to either SeaWorld, Aquatica or Busch Gardens during your vacation.  For more info and reservations, click here.

Our recommendation for a hotel in the area comes from MK sponsor Starwood, they suggest the Sheraton Vistana Resort Villas with one an two bedrooms suites so there's room for all.
