Summer in Vail

By Joyce Shulman September 11, 2012

They say that families visit Vail for the skiing but stay for the summer.  With the raft of incredible summer programming in and around Vail Valley this season, the warmer months are a perfect time to plan a visit.

The summer kicked off with the TEVA Mountain Games – the country’s largest celebration of adventure sports, music and art, plus plenty of family-friendly activities.  Kids had an adventure of their own on the kids’ climbing wall, learn-to-paddle kayak pool, trying to master Standup Paddle Boarding, bike races, a Mud Run and more.  Sound fun? The Winter TEVA Mountain Games are just around the corner!

Festival fans danced to the beats of the BRAVO! Vail Valley Music Festival that took place late June through mid-July.  Aside from all great music, kids couldn’t get enough of the Instrument Petting Zoo.  This free, hands-on traveling exhibit gives kids the opportunity to experiment with real orchestral instruments, while master students from art programs across the country teach young kids how to play.

Last month kids ages 6-12 took part in the 3rd annual KEEN Vail Kids Adventure Race.  More than 100 teams of two raced through an obstacle course like no other.  With a course comprised of hiking, mountain biking, zip lining, tubing down Gore Creek, archery, balancing on a slack line over a mud pit, and more, children learned the value of teamwork to help them reach their goal.

All summer long visitors have enjoyed local fare at the Vail Farmer’s Market and Art Show.  Shoppers found fresh produce and original art from local vendors.  On Sundays, children have had fun riding the mechanical bull and train, taking a jump in the bounce house, having their face painted, and getting a balloon character all before cooling down in the Children’s Fountain, located in the heart of Vail Village.
