Take Your Best Gal Pal - Your Daughter!

By Tasha Chen May 14, 2013
This month, Macaroni Kid focused on travel for you. But maybe you want to take you best mini-gal pal with you! If you are like most moms, you long for quality time with your child. Those uninterrupted moments where you share a life experience, do something exciting together, or just connect as two unique individuals. A fun way to create those memories is spending time away from the norms of everyday life, leaving the distractions behind and truly giving your child the gift of your time.

Here are three experiences every mother should enjoy with her child

1. New York City - Every kid wants to visit The Big Apple. The allure of this energetic city that never sleeps, with its bright lights, Museums, Broadway shows, sightseeing options, carousel rides in Central Park, Chinatown, M&M World, the Botanical Gardens, it all says fun time. There's something for each of you to enjoy in this city and the planning, with your daughter’s help of course, can be half the fun.

2.  A Destination of Her choice - Imagine being asked where would you like to go. Think how valued and important you would feel. Multiply that tenfold for your child who is more familiar with being told the plan vs. asked for her contribution. These trips have been credited with deepening the mother and child bond, repairing strained relationships (especially with teenagers) and starting traditions of special annual trips from which the memories will last a lifetime.

3. A Shared Bucket List Experience - What destination or travel experience is on your bucket list? Chances are, your child would love to share that experience with you. Test it! Just ask and see. My daughter tells everyone going rock scrambling/hiking with me for the first time was one of her most memorable mother and daughter trips. Knowing it was a wish list experience for me and a first for us both made the experience special. Enjoying the planning process together also creates a bonding opportunity.

Creating one on one memories of time spent with you is perhaps one of the most precious gifts you can give to your child. To make it extra special, create a photo book for each trip with personal notes from you --- this becomes a keepsake your child will treasure forever
