Tassajara Zen Mountain Center

By Lisa Barry-Gofberg May 13, 2014
Imagine taking a week just for you. That’s right – imagine taking that time to focus on making yourself a better mom, wife, daughter, volunteer, employer, etc. Every year, Tassajara Zen Mountain Center, the most remote and oldest Zen monastery in the United States, located 25 miles southeast of Big Sur, California, opens its doors to the general public for an annual guest season, which takes place from May 1-September 14, 2014, and they want to help you be your best you.

Founded in 1967, Tassajara has long been known as a place for self-discovery, healing and an escape from the stresses of everyday life. Ready to host guests in the new eco-friendly retreat center, Tassajara has a variety of programs that should allow you to find at least one (and probably several) that will pique your interest!

Whether you are a Zen and meditation seeker, yoga lover, artisan foodie or a “regular mom” (like me!) looking to unplug and rejuvenate, choose from disciplinary retreats in six specialty areas, all led by some of today's leading teachers: Body and Mind, Mindful Living, Creative Expression, Engaging Earth, Spiritual Practice, and Zen Study & Practice.

Tassajara offers a special opportunity for the general public to recharge, relax, and reconnect with themselves. Visitors soak in the hot springs, meander along the trails, savor Tassajara's celebrated vegetarian cuisine, stay in beautiful accommodations, participate in zazen (meditation), and enjoy the eclectic retreats offered by some of today's most celebrated teachers. Tassajara invites visitors to explore the variety of ways that Zen and other complementary practices can inform and enrich one's life.
