Five Great Warmer Weather Destinations in the US

News broadcasts abound with reports of snowy weather and frigid temperatures across many parts of the United States. But while much of the country is bundled up, there are some spots that experience mild temperatures in winter months. Thaw out, and enjoy the trip!

South Padre Island, TexasAveraging a high temperature of 68 degrees in January and 70 degrees in February, South Padre Island in south Texas boasts 34 miles of uninterrupted beaches and a score of activities. Family-friendly attractions include Dolphin Research and Sea Life Center, Sea Turtle, Inc., sandcastle building lessonsand Schlitterbahn Waterpark & Resort (which has an indoor water park in the winter months). And, of course, the beach.

Tucson, Arizona. With an average 350 sunny days a year and warm dry air, Tucson's climate is ideal for year-round outdoor recreation, with winter temperatures reaching average highs of 64-75 degrees. And Tucson offers plenty to do for family members of all ages and interests. Top family attractions include the Pima Air and Space Museumthe Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, Reid Park Zooand scores of parks and hiking trails set against the beautiful backdrop of the desert floor and mountain peaks.

Santa Barbara, CaliforniaSanta Barbara boasts clear skies, sunshine, and mild weather year-round. It also has an eclectic list of family-friendly activities that are sure to impress. In addition to gorgeous beaches, families can experience wildlife at the Santa Barbara Zoo, explore the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History and Sea Center, or ride horseback through the hills of Santa Barbara. 

Orlando, FloridaBesides the obvious draw to Orlando for the array of theme parks, Orlando has mild winter temperatures that make it an attractive destination this time of year. And because January and February are post-holiday/pre-spring months, visitors will likely find lower theme park and hotel pricing. Additionally, Orlando is within driving distance of multiple beaches, the Kennedy Space Center, the Central Florida Zoo & Botanical Garden

New Orleans, Louisiana
New Orleans makes the list — not for its sunny high temperatures, but because winter is a great time for families to visit without huge crowds. Although the average high temperature is a mere 63 degrees in winter, New Orleans still offers a great escape from snow drifts and arctic blasts. Typically known for letting the good times roll, the city has a family-friendly side that is great for kids. Young visitors are sure to enjoy the Audubon Zoo, the Audubon Aquarium of the Americas, New Orleans streetcars, steamboats, haunted history tours, swamp tours, and much more. (Note: February begins the heavier travel season with the arrival of Mardis Gras).
