Six Trips for the Thrill-Seeking Couple

By Harlisha Homer February 10, 2015
For the couple seeking thrills beyond the conventional, these six bold vacation ideas are sure to deliver!

Take a Walk on the Wild Side with Wild Food Adventures.
No Taste Like Home tours in Asheville, NC, offer a unique experience for the adventurous couple by taking guests "out to eat" — literally. As the only "you-pick" forage-to-table tour company in North America, guests are able to go "off the eaten path," gathering wild mushrooms, plants, and other "extreme cuisine." At the end of picking, guests are then provided a sample of their findings at a wild food picnic. It's dining at its freshest!

Sleep in a Treehouse and Try the World's Longest Zipline. Adventure lovers can take on a new kind of romantic venture at Historic Banning Mills, which is located in Whitesburg, GA (about 45 mins West of Atlanta). Sleep in a treehouse? Why not? At Banning Mills, couples who want to "branch out" with their accommodations can enjoy stand-alone tree room lodging, with a king bed, jetted tub, and panoramic forest views with rope bridge access. From the tree tops, the adventurous couple can surf 40,000 lineal feet of zipline course with 84 lines in the course, making it the world's longest continual zip-wire course! The tour also includes sky bridges, ropes challenge courses, and zip lines that take guests up to 60 MPH and offer exceptionally scenic views of the naturally preserved and historic landscape below. Couples can literally spend the entire trip above ground!"

Go Dog-Sledding or Have Breakfast with Moose. At Northern Edge in Algonquin Park, Canada, adventurous guests can sign up for a variety of experiences — from those for "gentle" explorers to those with extreme adventure tastes. The highly adventurous couple can "make tracks" with a snowshoeing and dog-sledding excursion. Or, if moose-spotting is a better fit, guests can opt for Morning Tea with Moose — a canoe trip in which adventurers have tea while exploring areas inhabited by moose, otters, beavers, foxes, wolves, and more. These all-inclusive adventures include lodging at Highlander House Log Cabin or other forest cabins, plus meals. Excursions are seasonal.

Swim with PigsYes, pigs! Guests at Royal Plantation Island at Fowl Cay, in Exuma Cays, Bahamas, can take a boat tour (there are several companies available) out to Big Major Cay and Pig Beach to see the increasingly famous swimming pigs. Guests can then feed the pigs — from the boat or in the water. And no need to fear them — the pigs seem to have grown used to their human visitors, appreciating and even expecting food from tour groups. Tour companies have varying options for their pig excursions — many include meals or other stops.

Stay in a Haunted Hotel. The Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, CO, is noted for its spectacular views, old world charm, and proximity to Rocky Mountain National Park. But, perhaps it's best known for its inspirational role in Stephen King's The Shining. Today, it is well-regarded as one of America's most haunted hotels, with numerous stories from guests and staff. The couple who seeks a slightly different type of adventure will delight in haunted hotel tours, night ghost tours and paranormal investigations. And pairs who seek the paranormal can see if they encounter their own experience!

Take a Ride on the World's Tallest, Steepest and Fastest Wooden Roller Coaster.
Goliath, which is located at Six Flags over Great America in Gurnee, IL, is the world's tallest, steepest and fastest wooden roller coaster. Adrenaline-loving couples can experience this enormous wooden roller coaster, which takes riders up a 165-foot lift hill super structure, then plunges down a record-setting 180-foot, near vertical 85-degree drop — all while traveling at record-breaking speeds of up to 72 mph. Certainly not for the faint of heart! Six Flags guests can opt to lodge at Key Lime Cove, the theme park's official resort, or one of the many other hotels in the area.
