Villa Del Palmar Cancun

A New Cancun Resort

By Kiley Sabatino July 12, 2011

The Villa Del Palmar Cancun “aims to please” and I concur!  I recently spent three lovely fun-in-the-sun days at the newest of the Villa Group’s family-friendly resorts.  Highlights include the extra-fabulous deluxe accommodations, mucho-friendly staff, delicious food, and once I got over the initial fear of being gobbled alive . . . swimming with whale sharks!!

I was warmly greeted and given the scoop by the bellman and reception-manager, Louis, who quickly became mi amigo.  Part of his job was to equip me with the sacred “all-inclusive” DO.NOT. REMOVE.(EVER.) bracelet, which was ritually secured to my wrist.  It remained firmly in place until check-out, when it was ritually cut-off by the friendly farewell crew.  Tan lines forgiven!

I arrived at the resort with just enough time before dinner to nosh on the beautiful fresh fruit platter in my room, take a bath, and relax on the hammock.  As far as I’m concerned, I can’t think of anything more welcoming than fresh fruit, a huge outdoor hammock, and a warm Jacuzzi tub (standard in every room at the resort).  The question becomes: hammock, then bath, or bath then hammock?  (I chose bath, robe, then hammock.)

My suite was beautiful.  It was spacious, spotless, inviting, and had everything I could ever need or want.  Just to be clear, I have HIGH standards when it comes to hotel rooms: I think if you’re on vacation, you should live it up!  So, by everything, I mean everything; a full kitchen, complete with a brand new tupperware set (I didn’t actually use it, but like any woman, I was comforted by its presence).  I also marveled at the lovely furnishing, washer/dryer, large closet, pull-out couch, 2 huge flat-screen TV’s, internet, and did I mention the jacuzzi tub in every room?!

I was then off to the Wednesday night “Mexican Fiesta” – ole!  Pool side, overlooking the beach, we enjoyed a full traditional Mexican buffet, from taquitos to dulce de papaya to a variety of fruity margaritas.  To add to the vibe, the talented mariachi band traveled from table to table playing the classics: we happily and unoriginally requested and enjoyed the classic “La Bamba!”

Throughout my entire stay at Villa Del Palmer, each and every member of the staff absolutely oozed happiness and smiles.  Must be something in the water or maybe 300+ days of sunshine a year will do that to you!   The friendly bellman, reception-manager, cleaning crew, and wait staff were more than willing to go above and beyond while servicing resort guests.   They even encouraged me to take plates of fresh fruit (mostly delicious papaya, my fave!) to the pool unquestioned.   At La Playa, ‘All Inclusive’ really does translate to “Everything is Included”!  No nickel and diming and absolutely no feeling like you’re an inconvenience to the staff – both major pet peeves of this discerning vacationer!

From the traditional Mexican cuisine to the sushi, appetizers and desserts, I enjoyed it ALL.  The family-friendly resort caters to a wide variety of taste buds, offering something for everyone, anytime of day or night.   I enjoyed everything from sushi to rice pudding to ceviche to one of the best arugula salads I’ve ever tasted.  Needless to say, the executive chef has a true talent for consistent deliciousness.

Our last night at the resort, we enjoyed a five-course dinner on one of the suite balconies; The dinner was topped only by the incredible setting, (huge balconies, equipped with outdoor seating and of course, a Jacuzzi bath) a perfect place to enjoy room-service for breakfast, or even to host a “dinner-party” gathering as a lovely alternative to eating out.

When I wasn’t eating, bathing, or relaxing, or being pampered, I made time to take advantage of all of the family-friendly activities.  Swimming with whale sharks is a must for all resort visitors – something I will never forget.  In fact, it’s in such high demand, that the Villa Del Palmar Cancun designed an incredible family package around it!  I’ve got to inform you though, the tour is LONG.   We left the resort at 7 a.m. and didn’t return until mid-afternoon.  I’d suggest this for families with older kids and just be prepared to spend the day relaxing, cruising, snorkeling, eating, and bonding with strangers from all over the world.  (Warning: if you get seasick, this may not be the adventure for you…)

While this family-friendly destination is still in the works, (literally, there are about 450 construction workers working hard daily to finish the project) it’s easy to conceptualize its completion greatness, scheduled for August, 2011.  In addition to all of the current activities to choose from; kayaking, scuba diving, horseback riding, golf, fishing, shopping, and touring, there will be a bunch of new options as well, so make sure you come for more than a few days!  I also suggest daily crafts on the pool deck (kids are supervised) and the ever-popular poolside bingo (a resort necessity if you ask me!)

I was lucky enough to get a tour of the construction zone, phases two and three.  Not only does it look amazing, it’ll also be ready in no time!  The Villa del Palmar Cancun will be complete with a full state-of-the-art fitness center and spa, (with individual treatment huts, each one air-conditioned!) new restaurants, (a Japanese Grille and an Italian restaurant) even larger suites, and, in the works until December, a full “Kids Club” with new and fun activities for all ages, all day, Sunday thru Friday!  If you want to sneak away, adults only, or if your kids thrive on a daily schedule packed with activities, socialization, games, and more, this is a great option!

With management experience from its seven sister resorts throughout Mexico, Villa Del Palmer is the newest in the group, offering exceptional and luxurious vacation experiences.  Villa Del Palmar is a sprawling, three-phase resort with Phase I in full swing.  Phase II is nearing completion and boasts a three bedroom penthouse with an enormous balcony overlooking the resort, the ocean and the city.  Amazing!!!!

I had a fantastic three day get away and encourage you to take a look when planning for your next adventure.   Whether you’re going with family, friends, or a couples retreat, the Villa Del Palmar’s got everything and more to offer.  I’m already hoping that a return trip is in my future!
