Ready to Plan Your Dude Ranch Vacation?

What you should know and what you should ask.

First time heading out to a dude ranch?  The best way to get the most out of your family vacation is to be prepared and know what to expect.  Here are some things to keep in mind when planning your trip:

Type of ranch: Is this a working dude ranch where you will be helping to tend to the herd, or is this more of a resort where unplugged relaxation is the only thing on the agenda?  While some people are looking for the full rustic ranch experience, others might be looking forward to some time to unwind - make sure you are booking your stay at the right type for your family.

Discounted rates or packages: Some ranches have discounted rates during the "off-season."  If you don't mind having just a few less things to do, this might be a great option for a more budget-friendly vacation.  Also ask about upcoming special promotions and packages that you can take advantage of.

Kids Programs and child care:  If you are traveling with kids, find out what types of kids programs are available.  If you might want to venture out for an adventure without the kids, don't forget to ask about childcare options and fees.

What's included: Is the ranch you are considering all inclusive?  Does that include both meals and activities?  If not, be sure to look into how much each individual activity costs.  For a large family, this number can add up quickly!  For meals, find out what your options are.  If your accomodations include a fridge, pack a small cooler with snacks and sandwich fixings for in-between meals.  You never know when hunger will strike!

What's the weather like:  Even if you are traveling in the summer, temperatures can drop down quickly in the mountains at night.  Be prepared and pack a sweater or two for chilly nights.

Don't forget these: You'll likely be spending a lot of time outdoors.  Don't forget sunblock, wide-brimmed hats, insect repellant and hand-sanitzer.  Comfortable shoes or boots are always a good choice for footwear.

And most importantly - be ready for an adventure!  Dude ranches offer families the chance to try something new!  Jump in and have fun!
