Sheraton Hacienda Del Mar Golf and Spa Resort, Los Cabos

Experience the family-friendly side of Cabo

By Melissa Alcorn January 14, 2014
With their beautiful beaches and warm temps, it's no wonder that Los Cabos is a top destination choice for adults looking for a fun vacation. But what about families? Is there a family-friendly side of Cabo? With an invitation to visit the Sheraton Hacienda Del Mar Golf and Spa Resort in hand, my son and I set out to discover the answer for ourselves.

During a whirlwind three day stay at the Sheraton we explored all 5 pools, several dining choices, the amazing new Sheraton Adventure Kids Club, the luxurious Cactus Spa and the beautiful beaches of Cabo. What we found was beyond all of our expectations.

When traveling with children, you only have a moment to appreciate the beautiful property, covered in gorgeous flowers and palm trees of all sizes, before you are dragged to the sparkling pools. And the Sheraton Hacienda Del Mar thought of everything when it came to swimming options. There's a zero-depth pool with attached children's pool for the really little ones and an infinity pool, and for the adults, there is even a swim-up bar. Some of the pools are nestled among the gardens and others put you in the middle of all the action. Staff members float around the areas making sure you have everything you need - whether it is a bite from the nearby Las Sirenas delivered straight to your lounge chair or an umbrella to provide some shade. Toss some swim goggles in your suitcase. Kids will enjoy getting a closer look at the colorful designs on the bottom of the pools. From dolphins to flowers and turtles, the decor is amazing from both outside the pool and in.

When you're ready to dry off, a walk along the Sea of Cortez is in order. The beach alongside the Sheraton Hacienda Del Mar is beautiful with big waves and plenty of space to explore and play. It's a bit too rough to swim in (staff does a great job of reminding you of this), but you can dip your toes in and kids will love collecting seashells along the shore. Walk a bit further down and find giant rocks covered in tiny snails. Budding scientists will be amazed.

It's easy to work up an appetite after all the swimming and exploring, and the Sheraton Hacienda Del Mar offers plenty of dining options to satisfy your hunger. We found traditional Mexican cuisine, Mediterranean flavors, and the award winning Pithayas Restaurant that boasts elegant dishes such as grilled octopus that pairs great with a wine selected from over 400 choices. Our favorite was Tomatoes Restaurant that offered buffet style dining. Try something new and go back for your favorites. Of course the kids are not forgotten at meal times. Each restaurant offers a children's menu where you can find familiar favorites such as grilled cheese, chicken fingers and more.

When you need a quiet moment, make reservations for a massage at the Cactus Spa for you, a golf reservation for dad, and a visit to the Sheraton Adventure Kids Club for your children. This brand new area of the Sheraton is a fun and safe place for your kids age 4-12 to play while you enjoy some personal time. Staff are professionally trained and Red Cross and CPR-certified. While under their care kids will enjoy making crafts, such as a pinata, and playing games with new friends. There's also an enclosed trampoline and a kids' pool with sprayers and slides. The section is completely gated giving you another layer of security. The Kids Club also offers extras such as a camping adventure and birthday parties. Sure, it costs a little extra to take advantage of the Kids Club, but with their reasonable rates, you'll find yourself making reservations more than once.

No vacation is complete without an off-site adventure and just down the road you'll find Chileno Bay, a safe swimmable beach. Add in even more fun by booking the Cabo 4 Kids excursion package from Baja Outback. Certified youth activity coordinators bring all the fun: snorkeling gear, boogie boards, sand castle building tools, snacks, drinks and plenty of energy to keep up with (and closely supervise) your children so you can relax. But don't sit for too long - you'll want to grab a snorkel mask of your own and head into the water to see the bright fish swimming just a few steps into bay. This 4 hour excursion includes all of this plus round trip transportation for just $70 per child and $50 per adult.

After a day of fun, head back to your room for a dip in the jacuzzi tub before curling up in your Sheraton Sweet Sleeper Bed. With 24 hour room service just a phone call away, you may never want to leave. That is, until the kids hear about the tie-dye t-shirt activity and Mexican bingo games happening on the beach.

Turns out there really is a family friendly side to Cabo and it's located at the Sheraton Hacienda Del Mar Golf and Spa Resort.
