10 Tips for the First Time Skier

By Eric Cohen - Macaroni Dad October 14, 2014
Taking the family skiing for the first time? It's a great way to create memories and build a tradition of family recreation that can last generations.

Here are a few tips to get you off on the right foot... or ski...

1. Dress for Success. A cold, wet day on the slopes is as much fun as a cold, wet day anywhere... not much. In fact, dressing for skiing is so important, we've dedicated an entire article to it below! One extra tip: dress in bright colors, it makes it easier for your friends and family to spot you on the slopes.

2. Take Lessons. For you and the kids. Don't let your friend who's an "expert" skier try to teach you. Take the long view and invest in lessons. Group lessons are fine, and usually more fun for the kids who are used to learning in packs.

3. Take it Easy. No need to pack it all into the first day. After your lesson, go relax, take the kids for a swim, soak in a hot-tub and enjoy a great dinner. You deserve it and the whole family will be fresher for tomorrow.

4. Look for Other Fun Activities. Speaking of a swim, try to stay someplace with a pool and be sure to check out the other activities offered at the resort. Many have ice skating, snow tubing - some even have alpine coasters, enjoy rec centers and lots more. Remember, the goal is to have a great vacation, not create the next Olympian.

5. Rent Good Gear. Make sure the boots fit and spend as much time as you need getting boots that are as comfortable as possible. You may have to try a couple of different brands but that switch can make a huge difference.

6. Stay Hydrated. You think of hydration in the summer, the same applies in the winter. Drink more water than you think you need and encourage your kids to do the same.

7. Avoid Holidays. For the first time trip, try to avoid the Christmas rush. The trip can be overwhelming, and dealing with the added crowds can take away from the fun. Other times can be quieter and less stressful.

8. Wear a Helmet. Yes you, and your kids. They are warm, light and comfortable, like these from Bern. There's no excuse not to. And for some added fun, try CrazeeHeads

9. Watch the Weather. If it's raining, go to the movies. If it's bitter cold, layer up and take frequent breaks. If the slopes are super icy, it's hot chocolate time. It just makes sense to introduce your family to the sport when it's the best it can be.

10. Know the Code. As a skier, you have certain responsibilities to be a safe participant of the sport. You can see the official Skier Responsibility Code HERE. It's important for you and those around you to follow the rules of road (slope).
