In my five days with Heiner, I learned a wealth about Costa Rica's rich history and even richer ecology. He helped us spot countless creatures, introduced us to a variety of foods, shared dozens of stories that brought history to life and he even helped me practice my very inadequate Spanish. The day before I left, I asked Heiner to name five stops for an ideal family itinerary and he was generous to allow me to share them with you. So, from the guy who knows more about families visiting his country than anyone I've ever met, here is Heiner's top five:
- Xandari Resort and Spa. Just 20 minutes from the San Jose airport, Xandari is the perfect place to kick start, or wind down, your Costa Rican adventures with its gardens, service, beautiful pool and access to the Poas Volcano and the La Paz Waterfall Gardens.
- Nayara Hotel Spa & Gardens. This amazing hotel in the Arenal region is a place that "nobody should miss," Heiner says. Guests can reserve their own hotsprings or pool, the hotel is green and lush and close to the Arenal Volcano, hanging bridges and a brand new water park.
- Monte Verde and the Selvatura Canopy Tour. This is the best option for kids to check out the Cloud Forest Reserve, and dinner at the Tree House Restaurant and Cafe downtown is not to be missed.
- Savegre Rafting Tour. With Class 2 and Class 3 rapids, rafting on the Savegre is excellent for families. Stop half-way to hike to a waterfall where you can take a swim. "It is scenically beautiful, the weather is hot and the water is refreshing and fun for the kids," Heiner promises. And it is only about 50 minutes from Manuel Antonio, Heiner's last must-see recommendation.
- Beach Time at Manuel Antonio National Park. Manuel Antonio, on the Pacific coast, is Costa Rica's most visited national park. The well-protected beach is perfect for swimming and the wildlife is abundant. The area also offers ready access to a variety of activities: ziplining, surf lessons, fishing, whale watching, a catamaran cruise where kids can spot dolphins, swim off the boat and more. There are a number of hotels both in town and up in the hills overlooking the Pacific. Parador Resort and Spa is a favorite for families.
"Sometimes, at the end of a tour, I will hear parents tell their kids 'okay, kids, it is back to reality tomorrow.' I always remind them that this too is reality."
