A blueprint for a romantic weekend in the Windy City

By Melissa Alcorn February 10, 2015
There is nothing more romantic than exploring a new place hand-in-hand with your favorite "plus one", and love can be found in the air all over the city of Chicago, IL. Affectionately known as the Windy City, Chicago is full of must-see landmarks, fantastic art, shows, and fine dining to fill a week-long getaway for two. But who has time for that?! We've put together a blueprint for a weekend stay in downtown Chicago, with enough site-seeing adventures to fill your camera and special moments to last a lifetime.

FRIDAY

First things first, check into Embassy Suites Chicago - Downtown. Not only is this hotel located within walking distance of many city attractions, they also offer complimentary made-to-order breakfast in the morning, and a nightly manager's reception with complimentary drinks and appetizers.

Now that you are checked in, it's time to explore. The Embassy Suites is just steps away from Magnificent Mile. Take a stroll down Michigan Avenue and take a peek inside some of the best high-end stores in the city. There's one-of-a-kind shops and boutiques, spots to grab a drink, and plenty to see as musicians often set up on street corners.

Once you've built up an appetite, make your way towards the John Hancock Center. Skip the observation deck and head to the Signature Room on the 95th floor instead. Enjoy a fantastic dinner while overlooking what is rumored to be the best view of the city. Make reservations in advance for right before sunset and watch as the city slowly lights up after dark. What's more romantic than a meal for two high above the twinkling city skyline?

Once you've had your fill of the view, and if time allows, grab a cab and catch a late performance at the Chicago Theatre. From comedians to musicians, the Chicago Theatre offers memorable stage performances in one of the country's most legendary auditoriums. Don't forget to snap a selfie in front of the beautifully lit marquee.

SATURDAY

Start your day with a complimentary cooked-to-order breakfast at the hotel before taking a nice 20 minute walk to Millennium Park for a reflective photo in front of the famous Millennium Bean. While there, check out the cool collection of art located around the park. During the warmer months you may be able to catch a concert here and during the winter months you can grab your sweetie's hand for a turn around the ice skating rink.

Your next stop is the Art Institute of Chicago. Snap a picture in front of one of the two bronze lions flanking the steps of the main entrance before heading inside to view some of the world's most magnificent works of art. Find a list of exhibitions HERE. Take a break to grab some lunch at Terzo Piano, located inside the Art Institute. This restaurant promises "Italian with a Modern Perspective"; dishes made with local organic ingredients.

After an afternoon of art, head back to your hotel for a his and her spa treatment in the comfort of your room. That's right, the Embassy Suites Chicago - Downtown also offers in-room massages. Once you are relaxed and recharged, freshen up before heading back out for dinner. Our pick is an evening of flavorful Latin fusion cuisine at Carnivale Chicago. Be sure to make your reservations well in advance!

SUNDAY

Start your day once again with your complimentary hotel breakfast before heading a few blocks south to the Chicago Riverwalk. Take a leisurely stroll along the river and get an up close view of some of the amazing architecture of Downtown Chicago. Here you can also hop in a water-taxi, take a boat cruise and browse crafts made by local artisans.

If you are visiting between April and October, make your next stop Buckingham Fountain. The fountain boasts a spectacular water display every hour on the hour for 20 minutes. Head back at night to see the light and music show that accompanies the display.

No trip to Chicago is complete without a stop at Navy Pier. Take a spin on the 150 foot high Navy Pier Ferris Wheel for amazing views of the city skyline and lakefront. Then browse the Navy Pier shops, pick up some souvenirs and share some sweet peanuts from Completely Nuts with your sweetie.

Don't miss the Crystal Gardens on the second floor of Navy Pier. This indoor, one acre botanical garden is home to dancing leapfrog fountains, palm trees, a variety of plants and of course gorgeous views of the lakefront, Chicago skyline and Navy Pier Ferris Wheel.

Afterwards, grab a bite at any of the dining options at Navy Pier before dashing over to the Willis Tower Sky Deck. Hang on to your loved one as you step out onto the Ledge's glass box for one last view of the amazing city of Chicago.

There you have it... a blueprint for a romantic getaway for two in the Windy City!
