My husband and I are coming up on our tenth anniversary, and it simultaneously feels like eons ago and just yesterday that we stood across from each other and made it official. We know how important it is to keep the sense of adventure in a relationship, so when an opportunity arose to experience Adventures on the Gorge, we jumped at the chance.
Not only is Adventures on the Gorge perfect for a couples trip, but it’s also beyond amazing for families. With whitewater rafting, zip-lining, rock climbing, kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, mountain biking, hiking, fishing, and an aerial adventure park, there is definitely something to satisfy everyone in the family. They also have tons of lodging options ranging from tent camping to luxury cabins with private hot tubs.
We hit the road, heading for West Virginia; a super easy drive from our neck of the woods outside of Philadelphia, and within a day’s drive from Nashville, Atlanta, Indianapolis, and just about all points in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. Approaching the campus, we were blown away by the beauty of the lush, rolling hills and gorgeous lakes.
So, what was it like?
Upon check-in, we received a detailed itinerary, which was reviewed with us by a staff member who took the time to go over each activity, the campus map, and any special instructions for our excursions.
We settled into our cabin quickly. I say “cabin”, but this was a HOUSE with loads of comfy sleeping options, a full kitchen, and a secluded, covered hot tub. The full kitchen allowed us to have the comforts of home (like a full pot of piping hot coffee) whenever it suited us, and the dishwasher would have been key when traveling with the whole family.
How about some adventure?
First up was our Lake Adventure. We excitedly boarded a pontoon boat, ready to learn about all that Summersville lake has to offer. It didn’t take long to convince my husband to don a harness and give rock climbing a try. He was a natural, and there was something really special about watching him step out of our normal routine and experience something totally new. We completed the morning with stand-up paddleboarding and kayaking around the lake. I overestimated my skills and nearly ended up taking an impromptu swim!
After a day relaxing on the lake, it was time to up the adrenaline on Day 2. Spending the morning on the Gravity ziplines was just what the doctor ordered. Super-fun and knowledgeable guides took all of the anxiety out of strapping myself into a harness and stepping off of the ledge. The combination of adrenaline and spectacular views while whizzing at 65 mph across the landscape left me totally zen.
The perfect follow-up was the Treetops Zipline Canopy Tour; 10 zip lines, 5 sky bridges, a couple of short hikes through the Hemlocks, and a rappel make for a really unique way to take in the beauty of West Virginia. This adventure was the one that made me really push myself outside of my comfort zone, and the sense of accomplishment I felt when we finished was fantastic.
Where do we fuel up?
For breakfast, you can grab a quick bite at Sweet Java Falls, make something at your home away from home, or check out the fresh buffet breakfast at Smokey’s. I got to experience my very first biscuits and gravy, and it was beyond delicious. I know, I know... I’m very late to the party on that one, and I’ve been kicking myself ever since!
Chetty’s became our go-to for lunches and easy dinners. Tasty pub food, served with a stunning view of the gorge. And they make their own potato chips, which were delicious. Totally family-friendly, which makes it a win in our book.
Smokey’s Steakhouse gets our vote for upscale (but un-stuffy) dining on the gorge. The grilled Strip Steak, creamy Shrimp and Grits, and an amazing Asian inspired Tuna Tartare were among our top picks. Its location makes you feel like you’re dining in the tree canopy, and you simply can’t beat the view at sunset.
But what about the kids?
Most of the adventure activities are open to kids age 6 and up, so you’re sure to find something perfect to wear them out. Have a little one under 6? There are tons of fun options like hiking many of the area trails, a giant playground, and Canyon Falls Swimming Pool and splash park. The full and half day Kids Camp is the answer for those over 5 years old who want to get a taste of adventure, but aren’t quite ready for the full excursions.

Our drive home was spent reflecting on how awesome it was to reconnect in such amazing surroundings, while pushing ourselves out of our comfort zone. It truly was the exact blend of exhilarating and relaxing that we had been looking for. We already have the wheels turning for a group trip with family and friends, since this one is just too good to keep to ourselves.
My family and I were guests at Adventures on the Gorge. All opinions and thoughts are my own. No other compensation was received.
