For families with children diagnosed with ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder), choosing a vacation where every member of the family will feel comfortable and included can be a challenge. In honor of Autism Awareness Month, here are five vacation ideas that are ideal for any family.
Beaches Resorts, The Caribbean
Families of children with autism and other special needs will find specialized services, engaging activities and custom dining options at Beaches Resorts so that all families may enjoy a memorable, luxury experience. They are the first resort company in the world to complete the rigorous IBCCES (International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards) and Autism Certification.
Sesame Place, Philadelphia
Sesame Place is the first theme park in the world to be designated as a Certified Autism Center (CAC). The park offers specialized services to guests with autism and other special needs, including certified staff, a ride accessibility program and guide, quiet rooms, low sensory areas and alternate dining options. Sesame Place is also home to the character Julia, a sweet and curious 4-year-old with autism.
Morgan’s Wonderland, San Antonio
Morgan’s Wonderland is a family theme park created with special-needs individuals in mind. The 25-acre park is specifically designed for children and adults with special needs and readily provides free admission for those with serious, long-term physical and cognitive disabilities. Morgan’s Wonderland is a place where the common element of play creates an atmosphere of inclusion for those with and without disabilities, encouraging everyone to gain a greater understanding of one another.
Autism on the Seas
Autism on the Seas organizes cruises for families with special needs. Staff cruises with guests to provide and coordinate private activities, respite and services for the duration of the cruise. They also provide "Individual Autism Cruise Services" for individuals and families who wish to cruise on any date or ship of their choice on Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, NCL, Carnival, or Disney Cruise Lines.
Autism-Friendly Performances on Broadway, New York City
Each year the Theatre Development Fund (TDF) organizes Autism-Friendly Performances on Broadway. Each show is performed in a friendly, supportive environment for families and friends with children or adults who are diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder or other sensitivity issues. In addition to production adjustments, these performances offer quiet and activity areas staffed with autism specialists and downloadable social narratives with pictures of the theatres and productions.
