Trying to plan a family vacation, but not sure what to do or where to get started? Take a family road trip! The fun of hitting the road is that it’s not just about the end destination, but the whole experience along the way. There’s always a new place to see, a diner to check out, and fun memories to be made along the way.
Lipton, the iconic tea brand, has collaborated with TripAdvisor, the world’s largest travel site, to make road trip planning easy with their list of “2018’s Route 66 Road Trip Gems.” The list features must-experience attractions for families to check out this summer along one of America’s most historic highways, including fan-favorite diners, the best places for grab 'n go snacks, and the perfect locations to snap a roadside selfie across all eight states. Highlights Include:
- Cozy Dog Drive In (Springfield, IL) – Originator of the corn dog on a stick. Born in 1949 along Route 66 and remains home to the one and only “Cozy Dog.”
- The Big Texan Steak Ranch (Amarillo, TX) – Everything is bigger in Texas, and this 72-oz steak competition is no exception. The rules are simple: you can’t get up during the contest, have one hour to finish one shrimp cocktail, one baked potato, one salad, one roll with butter and of course, one 72-oz steak. And no cheating – you’re on your own for this one!
- The Chili Parlor (Springfield, IL) – Opened in 1945 with barely enough room for the kitchen and just 11 stools at the counter, patrons would line the counter waiting for a turn to sample the one-of-a-kind original chili recipe. Today, it’s in a larger location but still holds its reputation as the best chili in Illinois.
- Ollie’s Station Restaurant (Tulsa, OK) – Talk about a home cooked meal: Ollie’s owner, Joe, is known for baking his delicious pies from scratch. The fan-favorite flavor is coconut cream.
- Jigg’s Smokehouse (Clinton, OK) – This place is not for the faint-hearted. The Wooly Burger alone boasts 2 lbs. of fun, including 31 oz. of hickory-smoked ham, seven slices of beef summer sausage, cheddar cheese, mayo, Chow-chow relish, and Jigg’s BBQ sauce.
- Old Riverton Store (Riverton, KS) – General store that has been in operation since 1925 (prior to Route 66 becoming the official cross-country highway from Chicago to LA). Today, it’s a nationally registered historic landmark that is known for its delicious deli sandwiches.
- Bernardi’s II Restaurant (Pontiac, IL): This authentic Italian restaurant’s most popular dish is a bit unexpected: the best fried chicken in Pontiac, IL.
- Le Roy’s (Monrovia, CA) – A landmark in Monrovia that has served big portions and classic dishes since 1976. No visit is complete without tasting the popular Le Roy’s Burger (1/3 pound beef patty with pastrami).
- Westside Lilo's Café (Seligman, AZ) – In the mood for an authentic bratwurst and schnitzel but don’t have time to make it to Germany? Leave it to German-born Lilo to serve up the best authentic German food around.
