Post-Hurricane: Hawks Cay Reopens After $50 Million Transformation

A Macaroni Kid favorite is back!

By Eric Cohen August 14, 2018

Long-time readers of Macaroni Kid Family Travel know we are huge fans of Hawks Cay Resort in the Florida Keys. It was heartbreaking to learn about the damage inflicted by Hurricane Irma last September, yet as is often the case, every cloud (even a hurricane cloud) has a silver lining. And later this month, our beloved destination will reopen with a refreshed vacation experience.

Best of all, the opening is just in time for Hawks Cay Resort's annual Heroes Salute kickoff event, which takes place over Labor Day weekend and honors those who have served our country. The weekend is chock full of events including a concert, 5K run, fireworks, and more.

Sheldon Suga, VP of the resort, summed it up this way, “After months of restoration and hard work, we’re eager to reopen and introduce guests to the reimagined Hawks Cay. We’re bringing back what guests loved about Hawks Cay with a fresh design in the main hotel and new experiences that will take the Resort into a new era.”

The $50 million dollar renovation focused on the main hotel, with a brand new lobby design, and updated guestrooms and public areas. There are also new restaurants including, Sixty-one Prime, featuring a menu of prime steaks and signature seafood dishes, as well as a selection of seasonal specials. And Hawks Cay Marketplace will open as a casual eatery serving a fresh menu of salads, sandwiches, and pizzas that can easily be taken to-go for guests who don’t want to leave their lounge chair for too long. There's even a new "adults-only" area called Oasis Cay.

Families will enjoy the newly-introduced special entertainment for round-the-clock fun with Captain Hawk and Priscilla the Pirate Queen performing at the Pirate Ship Pool and Koral the Mermaid telling stories and splashing around at the Coral Cay Pool. New programming will be added to the Resort’s offerings from comedy shows to poolside parties for the entire family to enjoy.

And of course, there's the Dolphin Connection and the salt water lagoon for more family fun. All this means one of the best family-friendly resorts we've experienced is even better. If you've never been, now's the time.
