The Classic Maine Route 1 Road Trip

April 9, 2019

For some, nostalgia is the motivator. All these years after Jack Kerouac’s 1957 novel On the Road, the American road trip — broadly defined as any driving vacation that includes multiple stops — runs deep in travelers’ hearts. Road trips have always offered freedom and the liberty to hit the road in one’s own car, according to one’s own rules and schedule, is the way to go for so many for their summer vacation.

It’s American individualism.

And there is nothing more classic than taking the original Route One road. While it may begin way up in Fort Kent along the Canadian border, Ogunquit and the Meadowmere Resort have got you covered for Southern Maine. From Kittery to Arundel, get off the Interstate and get into the small towns, small restaurants and local spots that make up the southern part of this great state.

In fact, there are sweet stops to make all along the way with one of Maine’s little secrets: The chocolate shops. In Maine, local chocolatiers are cooking up more than a couple of delicious treats. From the world famous – and life size! – Chocolate Moose to hand crafted truffles, Southern Maine is home to some of the best chocolate creations in New England.

In other words, you’ve hit the sweet spot. And each chocolate maker has their specialty – from artisan bars to vegan concoctions to chocolate tartlets (yeah, that’s right – mini chocolate pies). You might have to make a couple of trips to visit them all.

Whether you start north or south of Ogunquit, the Meadowmere Resort is in the heart of this amazing stretch of Route One and all these sweet treats. When you arrive, settle into the hotel to relax and unwind. Then take a dip in the Roman Spa with swirling salt waters. Head into town for dinner or ask them for a recommendation to a nearby restaurant. Most are walking distance and delightful.

Road trip stays are best made May 1 – October 31 and include breakfast to fuel up for the day, amenity access to soak off road weariness in the Roman Spa, wifi to research the next pit stop and parking for your road trip must, the car!

Start your engines and begin your classic Maine Route One road trip!
