Five Things to Do with Kids on a Rainy Day in Maui

By Joyce Shulman September 11, 2018

The island of Maui is an outdoor family playground with spectacular beaches, gorgeous hikes, and hundreds of outdoor adventures. Like many tropical destinations, rain typically comes in the form of a passing afternoon shower. But if the occasional rainy day happens, don’t worry -- we’ve got you covered with plenty of rainy day Maui family fun.

Maui Ocean Center

You might ask … with the ocean all around, why in the world would I go to the Maui Ocean Center? More than just a rainy day activity, a visit to the Maui Ocean Center lays the groundwork for an enhanced understanding as you and your kids head out to explore Maui’s natural aquatic wonders. Get up close to a coral reef, go eye-to-eye with Hawaii’s native sea turtles, and stroll through the 750,000-gallon Open Ocean Exhibit in a clear acrylic tunnel.

Ultimate Air Trampoline Park

A fantastic way to burn off energy and have a boatload of bouncing fun, the Ultimate Air Trampoline Park is centrally located in Wailuku. Reservations are recommended, especially on rainy days. All ages are welcome.

Maui Escape Rooms

Located in Whalers’ Village (great for shopping and lunch!) we discovered Maui Escape Rooms where your family can work together to find a famous scientist’s last invention, break out of prison, escape a pirate ship, or deactivate a bomb in an abandoned World War II bunker. It takes teamwork to get out successfully, a challenge that is a lot of fun.

Slappy Cakes

When our son spotted the sign for Slappy Cakes on a rainy Maui morning, he insisted we stop immediately because, well, it is called Slappy Cakes. With griddles built into the center of each table, it is breakfast and an activity all in one. Order up a squeeze bottle of pancake batter along with all of your favorite fixings and see how creative you can get. Maui-shaped hot cakes with shredded coconut anyone?

Snorkeling

It doesn’t rain underwater, so if there’s no lightning, grab some gear and snorkel off one of Maui’s innumerable beaches. Sure, without the sun the visibility might not be quite as good, but the sea turtles are just as majestic.
